Grace Williams (c1976)

Picture@Grace Williams Estate

The feedback I received from those who heard the piece was very positive and I am even more certain now that this work deserves to be performed more often.

I first heard the only existing commercial recording of Carillons, performed by oboist Anthony Camden, dated 1974 (*3), by chance, at the end of 2021. Strangely enough, a new printed edition of the work was being prepared at that moment and I began to work with Ruth Myfanwy and Mary S. Jones at Curiad on the oboe part. The score for oboe and orchestra as well as a newly edited oboe and piano reduction, based on the recently discovered version (handwritten by the composer herself) is now available at Curiad (https://curiad.co.uk/en/).

Grace Williams and her music

Grace Williams was one of the most prominent composers to have emerged from Wales during the twentieth century and was the first British woman to score a feature film (for Blue Scar, 1948) (*4). Born in Barry, near Cardiff, she was a talented violinist and pianist. She studied music at Cardiff University (1923–26), later studying composition at the Royal College of Music (1926–30) with Ralph Vaughan Williams. At the RCM she joined other gifted young women composers including Dorothy Gow, Imogen Holst, Elisabeth Lutyens and Elizabeth Maconchy, (*5). She later studied composition in Vienna (1930–31) with Egon Wellesz.

Grace subsequently worked as a successful composer and music teacher in London, but returned to live and work in Barry in 1947 due to ill-health, where she was soon hired to write scripts and to arrange folk songs for BBC children<span style="font-family: "Arial Unicode MS"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">’s broadcasts as well as to compose film music. She remained in her hometown where she was finally able to concentrate on composing full time, thanks to many commissions.

In a recording, published in the Welsh Music Journal and also during an interview, published on the Tŷ Cerdd website (*6 ), Grace Williams explained how she loved the trumpet (she wrote a concerto for trumpet and orchestra in 1963) but also describes the oboe as her "favourite woodwind instrument” and that she had a "soft spot" for Carillons. Williams has written many orchestral works where you will hear beautiful oboe solos, for example Fantasia on Welsh Nursery Tunes (1940), Penillion, symphonic poem in four movements (1955) and Ballads (1968) for orchestra. She also wrote a fantastic Sextet for oboe, trumpet, violin, viola, cello and piano (1931) (*7). Williams also wrote many vocal and choral music pieces.

Her compositions are influenced by Welsh folk music and poetry, Welsh landscapes, coastlines, and the sea. She was very critical of her own work. In a note on a handwritten manuscript for her Sonata for violin and piano, she wrote <span style="font-family: "Arial Unicode MS"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">“second movement worth performing, first and third not good enough” (*8). In the 1967 New Year<span style="font-family: "Arial Unicode MS"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">’s Honours List, she turned down an offer of the OBE for her services to music. She died in 1977 at the age of 70.

Carillons for Oboe and Orchestra

This charming work is scored for solo oboe, 2 french horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, percussion, harp, and strings, lasting about 10 minutes. The use of high-pitched percussion (triangle, glockenspiel, celesta) and tubular bells creates the bell-like sounds which inspired the title of the work. As a result of excluding woodwind instruments in the accompaniment, the oboe voice is heard distinctly which is pleasing for the ear and a joy for the soloist. Carillons was originally perceived as a three movement work, but Williams later added an extra movement, providing a rhapsodic and cadenza-like bridge between the second and fourth movements. The tonality of Carillons is based around B flat and E; this can be heard in the opening bars and especially throughout the general structure of the first movement.

The writer Malcolm Boyd compares the added <span style="font-family: "Arial Unicode MS"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">“accompanied cadenza” to that of the Oboe Concerto by Strauss, written in 1945 - it is possible that she may have been influenced by this concerto - and mentions that Carillons <span style="font-family: "Arial Unicode MS"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">“...occupies a unique place among Grace Williams<span style="font-family: "Arial Unicode MS"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">’ compositions. He mentioned to me that <span style="font-family: "Arial Unicode MS"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">“Grace Williams was present at the recording; she was rather an austere woman and very particular about the finer details”. David became Principal Oboe of the BBC WO in 1969 and he remembers performing Carillons with his orchestra again a few years later.

In 1973 Williams revised the work and the new extended version was recorded in 1974 by oboist Anthony Camden and the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Charles Groves (*10). A review of the 1974 CD recording, written by A. J. In 1975 he left Wales to play in the Philharmonia in London but in 1977 performed the revised four movement version of the work with the BBC Welsh Orchestra, conducted by Vernon Handley. All of the BBC WO performances would have been broadcast on the radio and the composer's original handwritten scores would have been used.

I encourage everyone to investigate and discover more about Grace Williams and this fantastic piece. Carillons is both fun to play and to listen to and very much deserves a place in the standard oboe repertoire.
